Race preparation

A practical running race-day checklist.

Review clothing, footwear, timing, hydration, nutrition, weather, and travel before leaving for the start line.

In short

A race-day checklist should cover the tested kit you will wear, bib and timing requirements, fuel and hydration, weather options, transport, and the organizer’s latest instructions. Prepare the setup before race morning and avoid untested changes.

Core race kit

  • Tested race shoes and the socks you plan to wear.
  • Race clothing appropriate to the expected conditions.
  • Race bib, pins or belt, timing chip, and required identification.
  • Running watch charged, configured, and paired with any sensors you use.
  • Glasses, hat, gloves, sleeves, or layers selected for the forecast.
  • Anti-chafe, sunscreen, and other personal items already tested in training.

Hydration and nutrition

  • Pre-race food and drink you know your stomach tolerates.
  • Race fuel in the quantity and timing used during training.
  • Bottle, flask, vest, or belt if you plan to carry your own hydration.
  • Electrolytes or drink mix prepared according to your tested plan.
  • A clear understanding of aid-station locations and what the event supplies.
  • A simple backup option if a planned item is unavailable on the morning.

Before leaving for the start

  • Check the organizer instructions, start time, wave, and bag rules.
  • Confirm the route to the start and allow time for transport and queues.
  • Review the latest weather and make only necessary, tested adjustments.
  • Pack warm-up or throwaway layers and a clearly labelled drop bag if allowed.
  • Set alarms, charge the phone, and save any tickets or QR codes offline.
  • Lay out the complete setup in one place so the final check is visual.

Use Kitlo to make the checklist repeatable

A checklist is most useful when it points to equipment you have already chosen and tested. Build a race-day setup from your Kitlo gear library, review it with Ready before leaving, and associate the effort with the gear afterward.

Always follow the event organizer’s rules and adapt this list to your distance, conditions, medical needs, and travel plan. Kitlo supports preparation; it does not replace official race instructions or professional advice.

Common questions

When should I prepare my race-day kit?

Choose and test the important equipment during training. Lay out the complete setup the day before the race, then use the final review for weather-dependent details, charging, documents, and travel.

Should I use new shoes or nutrition on race day?

Race day is usually the wrong time to introduce untested footwear, clothing, hydration, or nutrition. Use the products and quantities you have already practised with, unless safety or event guidance requires a change.

Does this checklist replace the event instructions?

No. The organizer’s rules, mandatory equipment, start procedures, and local conditions take priority. Treat this as a general preparation framework and adapt it to the event.

How does Kitlo help with race preparation?

Kitlo lets you organize the gear you own, build a reusable race-day setup, review preparation items before the effort, and associate the completed activity with the equipment used.
